Exciting Update: Northeastern Huskies Hockey to Continue at Matthews Arena
Northeastern University's men?s and women?s hockey teams have confirmed that they will continue to play at Matthews Arena for the 2025 season, despite rumors of its impending demolition due to structural issues. This historic venue, which has been a cornerstone of Boston sports since 1910, is home to many significant teams and events, including the original Boston Bruins and Celtics.
The replacement plans for Matthews Arena were submitted in March, but delays in the review process mean that demolition will not begin until 2026, with a new facility expected to be completed by the start of the 2028-2029 season. In the interim, the men?s basketball team will relocate to the Cabot Center. However, the hockey teams face challenges in securing alternative rinks, which could lead to a schedule heavy on road games over the next two seasons. The last hockey match at Matthews Arena is set for December 13 against Boston University, offering fans one last chance to experience this beloved venue before its transformation.
